Ningbo CPI rose 2.2 percent last year

Ningbo's consumer price index (CPI) in 2013, a main gauge of inflation, rose 2.2 percent over last year, lower than the national average (2.6 percent), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said last Friday. Among them, CPI in December rose 2.9 percent year on year.

The NBS data show that CPI in November rose 0.4 percent over the previous month, driven by rising food prices caused by the cold weather and the new year holidays shopping.

Data show that the city's food prices last December rose one percent over the previous month. As the cold weather slows fishing operations, shrimp and crab prices are driven up sharply by 10.6 percent over the previous month. Fruit prices also rose 8.4 percent due to short supply. With the Spring Festival shopping in full swing, prices of pork and beef rose by 1.8 percent and 1.3 percent respectively. However, the fresh vegetable prices continued to fall last month, down by 4.3 percent over the previous month, due to the harvest of locally grown vegetables. In addition, some services prices saw increase. As the Spring Festival is approaching, air ticket prices rose 8.9 percent over the previous month, reversing its decline trend for months. Meanwhile, as the demand of laundry and sewing services for down jackets, coats and other clothing items get strong in winter, the service fees of laundry and sewing rose by 4.7 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively.
