Ecological burial encouraged in Beilun

"I'm here to apply for sea burial for my elder brother. It is his wish when he was still alive," said Mr. Tang, an old man from Beilun, who came to the burial office of the subdistrict. His brother died the other day. It is also a relief for him to know that the family will also have a subsidy for sea burial.
According to the official in the burial office in Xiaogang subdistrict, Mr. Tang is the fourth who came to apply for sea burial for their family since the notice of encouraging sea burial by the government. Under the encouraging policy, each resident of Xiaogang who chooses his burial in the way of sea burial, tree burial or ecological tomb will have a 4000 yuan subsidy.
There are about 80 ecological tombs in the cemetery of Jiangjiashan Village of Xiaogang, with a total area of 500 square kilometers. Huo Yuanfu, who is in charge of the cemetery said that the advantages of the ecological tombs are land-saving, beautiful in shape and easy to be afforested.
The single chamber of the newly built ecological tombs is about 0.5 square meters; the double one 0.7 square meters. The official from the burial office of Beilun said, "If it is an ordinary tomb, one mu can accommodate about 120 to 130 tombs; however, the same land can hold about 200 ecological tombs. The demand in 2014 is about 1500. If they can be replaced by free ecological tombs, it will save about 30% of the land every year."
