With the progress of the ecological program, the environment of Beilun is improving, and the people are happier. An ecological green town is taking shape.
"The forest city program can raise the image of our city and it concerns the interest of the people," said Hua Wei, Vice Secretary of Beilun District Party Committee and Mayor of Beilun. He said that the district would put in more money, and take more measures so as to afforest our city." It is reported that at present Beilun has over 27,000 hectares of land for forestry and 20,000 hectares of forests. In recent years, Beilun has invested over 450 million yuan in the ecological construction. As a result, the forest coverage of the district reaches 48%, with the per capita area of public green land reaching 12,3 sq meters.
In order to turn the district into a national-level ecological area and improve the environment, in March 2010, Beilun District made the decision to start the "afforesting Beilun" program. According to the program, with two years' efforts, Beilun should be up to the standard as a provincial-level forest city, a modernized new city best for living with woods, mountains, rivers and lakes.
An important part of this program is Beilun Botanical Garden, a place of interest with such functions as recreation, ecological education and outdoor sports. With the investment totaling 163 million yuan, the garden is to cover an area of about 670 hectares. The construction of the infrastructural facilities is planned to complete in 2013 and the whole program is to complete in 2020.
It is reported that from 2011 on, the district will put in 3 billion yuan to afforest the city. With the efforts made in the coming 3 or 4 years, the district will increase 1,670 hectares of green land and have the forest coverage reaching 52.5%. In 2014, the city will basically have a "green network" of mountains, rivers and woods, for the benefit of the people in Beilun
