It's Happening....

Bohemian Hue in Ningbo Grand Theater

5 On the evening of May 1st, the Ningbo Symphony Orchestra gave the eleventh performance in the music season at the Ningbo Grand Theater. The concert was directed by Xia Xiaotang, permanent command of the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra, permanent conductor of the Chinese Youth Symphony Orchestra, and professor of the command department in the Central Conservatory of Music.

In the first half of the concert were two suites of L'Arlesienne which is a drama of a French literary giant, Daudet. Bizet, a French composer wrote 27 pieces of orchestral music for the play, showing his fresh style in orchestration. Before performance, Mr. Xia Xiaotang, in his vivid and humorous language, analyzed the structure and content of the play to the

audience and brought the listener into the world depicted by musicians. In the first suite of L'Arlesienne, a Provence local ballad "Marche Des Rois" played by French horns, woodwind and string instruments in Provence unfolded in a majestic and graceful manner. Distinct with the prelude, Bells, the background music for the first scene in the third act stood out for its ingenuity and uniqueness in that the composer imitated the church bells with the French horns, harps, violins and violas.

If the performance of the first half is an "appetizer", there came a feast in the second half. Dvořák Symphony No.8, a piece of music in bohemian style, was composed by Czech composer Antonín Leopold Dvořák in 1889. Thanks to the command of Mr. Xia Xiaotang, the solo flute was as melodious as bird chirping, showing a solid and lively life rhythm of farmers. The fourth chapter began with a cheerful trumpet solo. After many variations, the cello distinctly embodied the theme, which made people feel relaxed and joyous. It seemed that the composer was sharing with his audience his fresh, bright and joyful feelings in his interaction with nature.

It is introduced that on May 21st, Czech's conductor Petr Popelka is going to provide the world renowned Dvořák Symphony No.9 with the Ningbo Symphony Orchestra for Ningbo audience
