Ningbo Zhoushan Port’s cargo throughput in 2022 exceeds 1.25 billion tons, ranking first in the world for 14 consecutive years

It was learned yesterday that the cargo throughput of Ningbo Zhoushan Port in 2022 exceeded 1.25 billion tons, ranking first in the world for 14 consecutive years; the container throughput reached 33.35 million TEUs, ranking the third in the world.

At the beginning of the lunar new year, the giant port is quite busy.

During the 7-day holiday of the Spring Festival, Ningbo Beilun First Container Terminal Co., Ltd. has completed a total container throughput of 109000 TEUs, up 47.9% from last year's Spring Festival; in Meishan Port Area, Meidong Company has completed a total container throughput of more than 162000 TEUs, up 10% over the Spring Festival last year.

"Busy is the taste of New Year"

Because of the particularity of dock operations, it is common for port staff to work during the Spring Festival and work overtime in shifts.

In the early morning of the first month, the 11 berths of Ningbo Beilun No.3 Container Terminal Co., Ltd. were busy. The ships were lined up along the coastline. There were 49 bridge cranes, 163 gantry cranes and more than 300 collection trucks in the port area. Under the command of the on-site control personnel, the lifting and transportation operations were carried out in an orderly manner with tacit cooperation.

January is the peak of goods import and export. During the Spring Festival this year, Ningbo Beilun No.3 Container Terminal Co., Ltd. has more than 2000 people on duty, accounting for 85% of the total number of employees, ensuring that the terminal operates 24 hours a day.

In Zhenhai Port Area, even at night, the port area is still brightly lit and busy. "In response to the cold wave and strong winds, we have reasonably arranged the shipping schedule and operation process, continuously strengthened the refined management of the site, and ensured the stable growth of the production and operation volume during the festival. The total coal throughput during the seven-day long holiday has reached 290000 tons, an increase of 30% over the Spring Festival last year." said the relevant person in charge of Ningbo Haigang Port Co., Ltd.

During the Spring Festival this year, the business stations and port stations of the sea-rail intermodal transport of Ningbo Zhoushan Port were still busy, and the salesmen were busy directing and dispatching the short-haul vehicles and arranging the railway plan; the cargo yard outside the window is in full swing, and the gantry crane is constantly grabbing and releasing, and trucks are busy.

The construction of smart harbor is accelerating at a stable pace

Meishan Port Area, where Wu Qifei, a post-90s bridge crane instructor of Meidong Company of Ningbo Zhoushan Port, is working, is the first demonstration site for Ningbo Zhoushan Port to build a smart port, with the goal of building a smart port of tens of millions of TEUs. At present, the second single container terminal of 10 million TEUs at Ningbo Zhoushan Port has begun to take shape.

In Meishan Port Area, vehicles based on the "5G+Beidou" smart and manual trucks shuttle through the dock and yard in an orderly manner. In the remote control gantry crane operating room 2 kilometers away from the dock, the operators stared at the monitoring screen while operating the operating handle. Through the screen, you can see that the container is accurately grabbed by the remote control gantry crane and unloaded to the truck parked at the designated location.

On the other side opposite the main channel from Meishan Port Area, vehicles and trucks in Jintang Port Area orderly drove into the entrance checkpoint of Yongzhou Container Terminal, ran to the different container areas of the yard to pick up the containers, and then gathered at the newly set exit checkpoint 100 meters away, leaving with full load.

Different from the two channels of the old exit checkpoint, the new exit checkpoint put into trial operation has four channels, each equipped with weighbridge, license plate recognition device and other facilities, and the unmanned sentry box exit service is realized. The collection trucks can independently complete the exit through the smart checkpoint channel, and the traffic efficiency is greatly improved. Since the New Year, more than 1000 vehicles per day passed Yongzhou Container Terminal, and more than 3000 standard containers per day were delivered.

With the clear whistle of the train, the fully-loaded train from Yiwu drove into Beilun Port Station of Beilun Port Railway in the Spring Festival. The staff of the sea-rail freight group in the rear dispatching center watched the train enter the station through the large screen, and used the walkie talkie to contact the pickup truck and arrange the loading and unloading yard to ensure smooth follow-up operations. Since the new year, the Beilun Port Railway Station has achieved more than 10 daily shifts and the daily average operation volume has exceeded 2600 TEUs.

Press the accelerator key for key projects

According to the data, the total import and export value of China's goods trade in 2022 was 42.07 trillion yuan, up 7.7% year on year. As an important node of the trade hub, Ningbo Zhoushan Port has made every effort to build a strategic fulcrum of domestic large circulation and a strategic hub of domestic and international double circulation. It has increased cooperation with shipping enterprises, continued to optimize the route structure, and achieved a new breakthrough in container routes, with a total of 300 routes, 13 new international routes compared with the end of 2021, including 120 routes of the "the Belt and Road".

A number of national, provincial and municipal key construction projects have successively pressed the acceleration key: the construction of the main works of the key infrastructure projects of Ningbo Zhoushan Port has started; the construction of deep water port areas such as Chuanshan, Meishan and Daxie has been accelerated; the 300000 tonnage ore terminal of the second phase of Zhongzhai, the largest ore terminal in Ningbo, has been fully put into operation; 45 times of connecting and unloading ore ships have been completed; the prototype of the "ten million container grade" container berth group in Meishan Port Area has taken shape, the annual container throughput exceeding 8 million containers for the first time; the "2+1" smart terminal demonstration projects, such as Meishan Port Area's intelligent container terminal, Shulang Lake's intelligent bulk cargo terminal, Yongzhou Smart Terminal, and so on, have made rapid and steady progress, and the level of port science and technology has reached a new level.

Advancing toward a world-class strong port

As early as 7000 years ago, the ancestors of Hemudu paddled and rowed, and Ningbo had the rudiment of the port. The ancient "Maritime Silk Road" started from Ningbo Port and reached Asia, Africa and Europe, experiencing rise and fall for several times.

Since the integration of Ningbo Port and Zhoushan Port in December 2005, Ningbo Zhoushan Port has made great strides. The global ranking of annual container throughput has jumped from the 15th place before the integration (2005) to the third place in the world, creating the "Ningbo Zhoushan Port Acceleration" that attracts the attention of the global port and shipping industry.

According to the plan, by 2025, Ningbo Zhoushan Port will be basically built into a world-class strong port, playing a more prominent role in serving the new development pattern of double circulation, the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and other national strategies as the hard core force; the port cargo throughput and container throughput will reach 1.3 billion tons and 35 million TEUs respectively, ranking first and third in the world.

The New Year's blueprint of Ningbo Zhoushan Port has also been drawn. It is learned that a number of hard core projects in Ningbo Zhoushan Port will be under construction in 2023, including accelerating the construction of key infrastructure projects in Meishan Port, starting the construction of the Beilun Branch Line and Meishan Branch Line of the railway, and accelerating the construction of the third phase of the Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway Double Line, and deepening the linkage development of "four ports" so that the sea-rail intermodal transport will exceed 1.6 million TEUs.
