Sondrel partners with the University of Nottingham to develop IC design talent in China

System-to-silicon IC design consultancy aims to plug talent-gap

THEALE, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2013--

Sondrel, one of the world's leading system-to-silicon IC design consultancies, has just announced a unique partnership with the University of Nottingham which will develop new IC design talent in China. The multi-million dollar programme will provide students based at the University of Nottingham's Ningbo China (UNNC) campus with three months' intensive training covering the latest IC design methodologies and practices.

Explained Sondrel's CEO, Graham Curren: "We run a global IC design services company. One of our business models is to provide experienced engineering teams close to where the customer is located. However, because we are growing so quickly and the demand from other companies is so great, we have been unable to find enough suitably-qualified personnel in China."

This challenging situation has led Sondrel to work with the University of Nottingham to develop a three-month programme open to third-year UNNC students and recent graduates with relevant qualifications and professional experience. The aim is to increase the availability of IC designers in the region, and the first intake of students will begin in June.

Students who successfully-complete the training will be offered a four-month internship at Sondrel. They will then be able to apply for a job at the company, which has offices in seven countries throughout Europe and the USA as well as Asia where it operates from Shanghai and Xi'an.

"We are convinced that this initiative will be beneficial to the students, our customers and of course, the participating companies and organisations", added Curren. "The IC business is global, and to be competitive, companies must have global resources yet understand local cultures and business practices. That is why we are so excited by this programme -- which is a first in our industry."

Professor Gethin Roberts, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, UNNC said: "As China's IC industry continues to develop rapidly, engineering students can feel confident in addressing the expanding need for designers knowledgeable in the most current design tools and methodologies."
