Progress of family farms in Ningbo

At the 3rd Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, it is decided that the country should consolidate the position of family operation in agriculture. As early as in the end of the 1990s, there appeared a number of large family planters of grain, vegetable, fruit, and animal farms. Driven the market and guided by the government departments, those family farms got registered so as to sell their products in the market. So far, the district has 46 family farms engaged in production of grain, vegetable, fruit, and husbandry.
In recent years, the district is promoting land transfer and encouraging appropriate land operation and this has resulted in a number of family farms with family members as the major labour force and strong consciousness in market, science, and innovation. This has become a new drive for the agricultural transformation and upgrading.
"The farms are generally large. The 22 farms in plantation are as large as 50 mu each. in 2012 the sales of the family farms amount to 77.78 million yuan with the profit reaching 16.26 million yuan," said a related authority from the Science and Technology Bureau of Zhenhai District. The average sales income and the profit of each family farm are 1,690,000 yuan and 353,000 yuan respectively, much higher than those of ordinary farmers. Compared with the traditional family based operation, the family farms have much higher per mu yield value and per mu yield.
"The family farms create work opportunities for the idle labor force in the local rural areas and this increases the income of the local farmers," said the same authority. So far, 22 family farms in the district have long-term employees, covering 47% of the total number of employees in the family farms.
