Industrial Heritage Opens up New Space for Ningbo's Urban Development

Pass through the small western-style building filled with the industrialized atmosphere of the last century, come to the pearl oyster in Ningbo Hefeng Creative Plaza to see the fashion exhibition, and then appreciate the magic of industrial design in the Ningbo Industrial Design Museum transformed from the old factory of Hefeng Spinning Factory. Sitting in a cafe by the river, reminiscing about this short journey...

When the Hefeng Spinning Factory established in 1905 completed its identity transformation to Hefeng Creative Plaza, it not only became a fashionable Internet celebrity check-in place in Ningbo and an important place for citizens' leisure and entertainment, but also gathered in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Germany and China. There are more than 120 well-known industrial design and cultural and creative supporting institutions, with more than 3,000 creative design talents. The industrial heritage carrying historical memory and cultural accumulation has been awakened and "lived" again. In the fifth batch of national industrial heritage list announced by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology last year, the Hefeng yarn factory project was successfully shortlisted, becoming the city's first national industrial heritage.

Old factories, old equipment, old products, old workshops, these industrial heritages that have continued industrial civilization and written the process of modernization, carry the historical memory and cultural accumulation of the industry and the city. In Ningbo, there are still a lot of industrial relics similar to Hefeng Yarn Factory. How to let the industrial heritage get rid of the hat of "urban historical burden" and regenerate in another way to realize the transformation from "industrial rust belt" to "urban show belt" The butterfly change will be an important proposition for Ningbo's urban development.

What can an old factory do? In Xiangshan, the China Ocean Fishery Culture Museum, which was transformed from the old factory area of "Shipu No. 1 Refrigeration Plant", was officially opened in April last year. The cultural center not only repaired and protected a large number of industrial relics such as the "Shipu No. 1 Refrigeration Plant" ice-conveying bridge, ice-conveying tower and oil storage tank, but basically retained the original pattern and style, highlighting the full industrial style, but also through reproduction The scene of the fishermen's block shows the rich marine fishing culture and the wonderful industrial relics.

Not only in Xiangshan, but also in Fenghua, Fenghua Museum, which has just won the outstanding public cultural space case in the 2021 Yangtze River Delta and some cities in the country's most beautiful public cultural space competition, is also the Fenghua Thermal Power Plant built in 1986.

With the changing times, Fenghua Thermal Power Plant was shut down due to environmental protection and sustainable operation difficulties. Tall chimneys and several factory buildings with geometric structures stand still in the rapidly developing city, like a "scar", bleak. Although it is dilapidated, it is a treasure land - located on the Jiangxi side of Fenghua County and on the north side of Dacheng Road, it is the most prosperous golden area in Fenghua.

In 2016, Fenghua District invested 800 million yuan in the comprehensive renovation of the abandoned factory buildings, which not only retained the frame structure of the thermal power plant, but also reflected new cultural connotations, met the needs of people's livelihood, and established a "revitalized" sample of industrial relics. This is also the cultural public construction project with the highest investment amount and the largest building volume in Fenghua's history.

According to the exhibition requirements, the overall renovation of Fenghua Museum continues the original steel frame arc-top buildings such as beams and columns, and retains the era symbols such as coal yard, sedimentation tank, coal conveying belt, workshop, chimney, condensation tower, etc. Layers, red refractory bricks were inserted, and the second design and renovation of the building was carried out.

On June 12, 2020, Fenghua Museum, covering an area of 8,300 square meters, was officially put into operation and quickly became popular. Today, under the large coal bucket hanging high in the sky, the creatively designed audience rest chairs have become the museum's Internet celebrity check-in point. The outdoor 52-meter-long coal conveying slope belt was transformed into a viewing step, which also provided the audience with a super visiting experience.

Industrial heritage is not the historical burden of the city. When they are reborn in another way, it will open up a vast space for the development of the city. Some old factories are transformed into cultural science and technology parks, from the industrial age to the information age, injecting new vitality into the local economic development; some old factory areas are integrated with modern design concepts, transformed into urban landscapes and public spaces adapted to modern lifestyles, and become people's leisure and entertainment. Some old industrial bases and resource-exhausted cities are actively transforming, using unique construction plants, facilities and equipment, production processes and other development tourism projects, realizing the conversion of old and new kinetic energy.

In addition to Hefeng Creative Plaza, Fenghua Museum, China Ocean Fishery Culture Museum and other venues, a number of industrial relics in Ningbo have also been renovated. In July 2020, the Yongjiang Fashion East Bund Construction and Fishing Boat Factory project was officially launched, and the fishing boat factory plot ushered in a gorgeous turn from an industrial corridor to a cultural coastline. Soon, Aike Performing Arts Plaza will be built with "performing arts +" as the core, integrating tourism, gatherings, exhibitions, industrial incubation, leisure and entertainment, and become a new landmark of Sanjiangkou fashion culture and tourism
